The Digital Equilibrium, hmm

I just read this article on the battle between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Is it me or has it all become really boring already?

As an early adopter of technology, especially within the home I’ am yet to be convinced by either of the new HD-DVD or Blu-Ray formats. I do not see any reason why I need to upgrade any of the hardware in my home to cater for either format. The reasoning behind this is that I will have to re-buy all of the movies I have collected over the years, and then buy a HD or Blu-Ray player.

One question that I’d like answered about the apparent need to upgrade: why do I need to buy either format especially when I have the ability to download digital media on the fly via the internet? Ok, if the UK used fibre optics rather than copper wiring then maybe we would get somewhere FAST.

A number of companies are spearheading the development of digital services such as classic movie downloads, games, TV, Music, Mobile TV etc. I just think that there is no real need for either the HD or Blu-Ray formats as it is now becoming time consuming understanding all of the tech jargon, the expense of upgrading and then wondering what will happen if HD-DVD or Blu-Ray fail… then what would you do with the player, the discs?

I would rather buy a device that allows me to collectively store all of my digital media on one central hub, which is then accessible by whatever device I want to connect to it. Surely that would make more sense than creating a format which will be obsolete in the next few years whilst we already harness the ability to utilise software and technology which are available today.
