Doggy illness :(

Filed under: My Dog — Duke @ 12:07 pm

My dog, Trixie is very ill. My sister took the dog to the vets yesterday, the vet did a number of tests and thinks she has an infection, it may be an infection of the kidneys. We’ll get the test results around lunch time today.

She’s unresponsive and hasn’t moved much in the past few days. She hasn’t eaten anything either. I really don’t like to see my dog lying here in pain but there isn’t much I can do to relieve her suffering. I really do hope she can pull through this illness.

Update: Thursday 11:00pm GMT - We had the report back from the vet. The blood test revealed a liver infection. She has to stay at the vets for a few days because she is on a drip and needs to have a scan. I’ll update this post with updates as and when I get them.

I’m not in the greatest of moods right now and I won’t be blogging until my four-legged best friend has returned home.

Update: Friday 02:00am GMT - Trixie passed away on Thursday. She
was diagnosed with a liver infection and there was nothing that could be done but end her suffering.

I do believe she has gone to a better place than here, and is most likely running around after family members and dear friends that have passed onto bliss.

LAN Times

Filed under: Gatherings, Work, Games Industry, LAN Events — Duke @ 1:30 am

Easter weekend saw the return of XL, one of the UK’s longest running Xbox and Xbox 360 LAN’s. The event was held at the Birmingham NEC, and from what I’ve picked up on the gaming grapevine is that the event was a great success.

Unfortunately I couldn’t attend XL due to prior commitments but I’m hoping to make an appearance at the next XL event. It would have been cool to get live twitter updates from XL, maybe somebody could get one going for the next event?!

When I saw Jon over at Play.com Live! he mentioned his next LAN event would be taking place over the May spring break. On another note, did anyone attend The Gathering ’08 last week? I was there last year and it was fun.

At some point I should really update my schedule to coincide with this years LAN’s!

The ride home tonight only lasted thirty minutes but it was awesome…  the stretched Hummer limo was very cool. Thanks Paul K.

I’m hoping I get a ride home tomorrow night :D

Videogamer in trouble?

Filed under: Videogamer — Duke @ 10:25 am

I just had a call from an old but good contact from the games industry and they seem to think that Videogamer is on it’s way out. According to my contact who will remain anonymous as per their request. They told me that Videogamer hasn’t had any advertising in over two months, lost their main writer and their video capabilities are ’seriously flawed’ when it comes to competing against site’s like Eurogamer.

Advertising just happens to be one of their key revenue streams apart from the content services they provide companies like VirginMedia. The other interesting thing is that, if you look at the site, they’re heavily promoting a rival ISP rather than their partners service… seems odd but then, some people will do anything for a quick buck.

@ Wembley

Filed under: Work — Duke @ 3:05 am

I started a new contract on Tuesday morning. This contract has absolutely nothing to do with games, so I won’t bore you with the details but as it was my first day on site, it went well and was extremely productive :)

I’ am based about five minutes away from Wembley Stadium. However, due to the nature of the work I’m doing, I have very limited access to the internet, email and twitter. Blog post’s will be posted when I have the time. Also, I’m not using a cell phone right now but the company has said they’d be giving me one next week. They also offered to provide me with a brand new Windows laptop, I politely declined, however, I was keen to point out that Apple has already released the MBA, and if they really wanted to provide me with a laptop that I could effectively use for work, then they can always provide me with a MacBook Air (SSD).

Time for sleep, I’ll update my blog when I can.

Play.com Live

Filed under: Gatherings, Games, Games Industry, Activision Blizzard — Duke @ 5:24 pm

Online retailer, Play.com held it’s first Play.com Live event at Wembley Stadium this weekend. I ventured over to Wembley yesterday and the event itself turned out to be alright, there were a lot of people packed into the exhibition halls of Wembley Stadium and numerous publishers were showcasing a number of pre-release games.

It was cool to catch up with the folks from Vivendi Games as well as TWNA. I love the fact that Vivendi had a giant Mr Stay Puft Marshmallow man greeting gamers as they walked down the long concourse of the stadium.

I was able to see a number of games in action, although Ghostbusters and Prototype were not playable. However, I was able to have a brief play of Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Conspiracy. All three titles look pretty good and I really can’t wait to try out the new Ghostbusters game.

I posted up a short video of the Vivendi Games booth and uploaded a few pictures but Jon has a lot more on his gallery.

The Worlds of Fantasy

Filed under: Friends, TV, Games Industry — Duke @ 12:55 pm

Ben, Keri and Tom took part in The Worlds of Fantasy program a few month’s ago and the program just aired last night. You can view the show on the BBC’s iPlayer service, you’ll see the new TV stars at the thirty-eight minute mark.

Will all of this fame go to their heads? Will they start charging ridiculous amount’s of money for their autographs? When I call them, will I get to speak to them or will I have to deal with an agent? :P

Spring Cleaning Online Networks

Filed under: Social Media — Duke @ 10:00 pm

I’ve used Windows Messenger for about seven years now and I’ve kept the same MSN Passport throughout that period. The passport is linked to my Xbox Live account and over the year’s I’ve gathered a number of contact’s, some of which were helpful while others were just a waste of digital space.

Last night I decided to clean up Window’s Live Messenger alongside my Xbox Live and Facebook contact’s. It took me around an hour or so but I was able to clean up all three network’s.

Surprisingly, it was quite a refreshing experience.
